Top Companies: This Week's Reviews

Allstate Insurance Company
P.O. Box 12055 1819 Electric Rd. S.W. Roanoke, VA 24018
800-ALLSTATE
http://www.allstate.com/home-insurance/flood-insurance-main.aspx
Services Offered: Flood Insurance, Mobile Home Insurance, Auto Insurance, Motorcycle Insurance, Boat Insurance, Home Insurance, Renters Insurance, Condo Insurance, Business Insurance
Company Overview: Allstate was founded in 1931 and is currently the largest personal lines insurer with over $150 billion in assets. They are a Fortune 100 company, offering thirteen different lines of insurance services. Allstate has over 70,000 employees and insure over 17 million households. They are one of many companies that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Our Review: Allstate is a great company with solid history. Purchasing flood insurance from Allstate is made simple in their homeowner’s section. They even offer helpful information about who needs flood insurance and what it covers. They also offer an Excess Flood Insurance program for those who feel regular flood insurance isn’t enough, which is a great service.
User Review: I purchased flood insurance through Allstate, because they insure my home as well. Then we had a bad storm and there was six feet of water in my basement, along with my car being under water. They sent someone out right away, and my basement was cleaned up the next day, and I had a check for damages within a week.
State Farm Insurance
One State Farm Plaza Bloomington, IL 61710
660-744-5838
http://www.statefarm.com/insurance/other/flood.asp
Services Offered: Flood Insurance, Home Insurance, Auto Insurance, Specialty (RV, Boat, Motorcycle) Insurance
Company Overview: State Farm was founded in 1922 by a retired farmer and insurance agent to provide lower insurance rates to those who were deserving. They have over 17,000 agents and 68,000 employees that serve over 75 million policies throughout the U.S. and Canada. In addition to insurance, State Farm offers other financial services.
Our Review: State Farm is very well known for their homeowner’s insurance. There isn’t much flood insurance information on their site, except the very important fact that flood insurance should be purchased before a disaster because it usually takes 30 days to take effect- this is the first place to tell us that. Their flood insurance, like the others, is backed by FEMA and offered through the NFIP.
User Review: I’ve had insurance through State Farm for as long as I can remember. When heavy rains flooded my home, the people at State Farm were there for me from the minute I called. They handled everything, and got my home back to normal in no time at all.
AmeriFlood
4613 Little Road Trinity, FL 34655
800-AMERIFLOOD
http://www.ameriflood.com
Services Offered: Flood Insurance
Company Overview: AmeriFlood was founded to provide flood insurance to consumers, but at a significant savings because it is purchased directly from the underwriters. They designed their business around a rebate program that offers customers 12% rebate on the same flood insurance policy they would get from anywhere.
Our Review: Anyone who offers the same thing for a lower price is good in our book. With flood insurance you don’t have many options, and you will not get different price quotes usually, because all flood insurance eventually goes back to the NFIP. The fact that they offer rebates is great. Their customer service section, however, does leave something to be desired.
User Review: I live in an area that is considered a flood zone, but couldn’t stand paying tons of money for insurance that I have yet to use. When I was referred to AmeriFlood and they said they could save me money, I was definitely interested. I researched the company, talked with the representatives at the call center, and they got me signed up that same day. Now instead of paying $600, I’m only paying $528!
The Hartford by AARP
Hartford Plaza Hartford, CT 06115
800-296-7542
http://aarp.thehartford.com
Services Offered: Flood Insurance, Auto Insurance, Home Insurance, Home Business Insurance
Company Overview: AARP and the Hartford have been teamed up for over two decades offering auto and home insurance to AARP members at significant savings. The Hartford has over 30,000 employees and has been in business since 1810. AARP has over 39 million members and was founded in 1958 to offer savings and discounts to persons over the age of 50 years.
Our Review: For those who are over the age of 50, this is a great program. If you aren’t, however you’re not eligible. Their website has a great design and is simple to use, which makes getting the insurance for members quite simple.
User Review: I’ve been a member of AARP for about five years, and recently moved to a home that requires flood insurance. I called them and got coverage in about ten minutes. It was so simple, and the people are so nice and helpful.

How To Select The Best Company For Flood Insurance

Finding flood insurance is not a difficult task if you already have homeowner’s insurance. Most companies that offer homeowner’s insurance will also offer you a flood insurance policy for that home. There are a few companies, however, who don’t offer flood insurance. All flood insurance is offered through the National Flood Insurance Program, so when you’re looking for flood insurance there is no need to attempt to find the “best rate”. The only way you will get a better rate on flood insurance is either by using AmeriFlood, which offers a 12% rebate on flood insurance, or by getting a multiple policy discount from your current insurer for having multiple policies with them, or being a member of a program such as AARP that offers discounts to its members. Otherwise, all flood insurance quotes you receive will be the same. It is important to obtain flood insurance long before a disaster. It usually takes 30 days for a flood insurance policy to take effect, so it cannot be purchased at the last minute. One more important thing to remember when it comes to flood insurance is that most flood insurance does not include sewer backup unless it is the result of a flood. Therefore, you need to have that protection on your homeowner’s insurance policy. Also, it is important to note that you do not have to live in a flood affected area to get flood insurance. Anyone can get a flood insurance policy, and you should never assume it’ll never happen to you. The people who assume it cannot happen to them are the ones who don’t have insurance when the storm comes and their home floods. You probably spent a lot of money on the home you live in; it only makes sense to protect your investment.
